Culinary Master: Thailand

You know when you get so hungry that you can’t even think of what you want to eat? That was me, at lunchtime today. I was sitting around my house thinking of what I wanted to eat for lunch and I started thinking of all the different foods that I’ve eaten while traveling in different parts of the world. I thought it might be fun to highlight some of those dishes and what made them so special to me.

The best meal we ate while in Thailand was probably while we were in Patong Beach. Patong beach is in Phuket, the southern tip of Thailand and its like Vegas on steroids; slightly overwhelming at first. While we were wandering around the streets of Patong Beach my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this little hole in the wall place and decided to go in because they had these giant pitchers of Chang and we just absolutely had to have one.

When we sat down we realized that the menus didn’t have any photos on them and there was even minimal english on the menus, when you see that, you know its going to be good. I always tell my friends when they travel to look for restaurants that don’t really advertise to tourists because they will get more authentic food at those kinds of restaurants. We decided to go with what we knew would be good and decided on Pad Thai and stir-fry beef with veggies. IT. WAS. FABULOUS. The stir-fry beef was incredibly tender and the veggies were cooked just enough to were they still had a perfect crunch. The sauce on the beef was tangy, spicy, sweet, and savory all at the same time. It was unlike the other places that I had had this dish before; so much better. The pad thai came wrapped in a crepe like shell and when I cut into it, a little cloud of heaven came billowing out. The smell was fabulous and by far one of the best pad thais that I have ever had. The noodles had a fabulous toothsome texture and the sauce was perfectly balanced; with a little squirt of lime, I was sold.

The picture may not look like much, but trust me, the flavors and technique were unreal. I think one of the main reasons that my boyfriend and I loved this meal so much was because, besides it being absolutely delicious and having huge pitchers of Chang, we were entertained the entire time by street performs featuring their various talents. It was such an enjoyable experience to be sitting on the side of a busy road, eating a fabulous meal, people watching and enjoying each others company. These kinds of moments are always special, no matter where I am in the world.

Cheers travelers!
